Asadura Festival

Güejareña Cherry Gastronomy Days

The last cherries of the season in Spain are grown in Güéjar Sierra (end of July, beginning of August), a unique characteristic due to the altitude of the crop. The pure water of the Sierra Nevada also has an influence, which gives them a unique and differentiated flavour on the market, making them unique, of a superior calibre and excellent quality with magnificent and highly valued properties.

 

Every year at the end of July, Gastronomic Days are held to promote the Güejareña cherry: its history, harvesting, selection, packaging and transport.

The bars and restaurants in the village prepare a menu and special menus with the cherry as the main ingredient with the aim of promoting it not only as a seasonal fruit but also as a high quality gastronomic ingredient.

Patron Saint Festivities

In honour of San Roque and Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

 

One of the oldest traditions, the patron saint fiestas are held between 11 and 15 August.

 

Güejar Sierra dresses its streets in lights, banners and garlands, with stalls selling jelly beans, churros with chocolate and waffles in the square.

 

The locals and visitors enjoy a varied programme: bullfights, ribbon races, a popular marathon, live music, a brass band and night-time street party, a foam party for the children (and not so children), a procession in honour of the Patron Saint... In short, these fiestas are full of joy and tradition.

La Vuelta a España 2026

September 12

 

On Saturday, September 12, 2026, the province of Granada will take centre stage in La Vuelta a España with one of the most demanding and spectacular stages of the race: a mountain stage finishing at Collado del Alguacil, in the heart of Sierra Nevada.

Stage route:The stage will start in La Calahorra, at the foothills of the Marquesado del Zenete, and will cross several areas of the province before entering Sierra Nevada, where the riders will face the decisive final climb to Collado del Alguacil.

This will be a summit finish, one of the toughest of the entire edition, and it could play a key role in the overall classification of the race.

Collado del Alguacil, the main highlight

This climb is well known among local cyclists and mountain biking enthusiasts. It stands out for:

  • Its steep gradients in the final kilometres.

  • The high-mountain natural surroundings, offering spectacular landscapes.

  • The altitude, which adds an extra level of difficulty for the riders.

As it is not a regular climb in La Vuelta, it represents a true novelty and one of the major attractions of this edition.

Please note that traffic restrictions and road closures are expected on this day, so visitors are advised to plan their journeys in advance.

Route of the tram of Sierra Nevada

Vía Verde

The newly conditioning path of tram of Sierra Nevada, it passes parallel to the river Genil from the area where is located the hydroelectric plant known as "The Fabriquilla" until the station of Maitena. In concrete, is have restored nearly 2 kilometers of travel with the purpose of put in value this route as attractive tourist and seal of the history and of the heritage natural and cultural of Guejar Sierra.

In the way we will cross one of the tunnels excavated to peak and spade in the rocks of its environment, and will cross bridges of last century.

The sidewalk was old Sierra Nevada disappeared tram pass. Therefore, along the way, six panels in chronological order explain the layout of the tram.

Likewise, a small stretch of the route has been reconstructed in accordance with the technical characteristics of the route of the beginning of the XXth century, along with the recreation of the corresponding air power line.

Seeing the views of the forest and the river Genil we will arrive to the area called Maitena, where it joins the river of the same name with the river Genil, in an incomparable setting, where are the buildings of the former station of Maitena, today also converted into a restaurant and where you can swim in a pool in the River, turned into a natural pool.

 

The Vereda de la Estrella ( the path of the star )

La ruta más emblemática

The Vereda de la Estrella was built in 1890 to serve as a channel of communication with galena and pyrite from the high top of the Genil Valley mines.

Today it is a comfortable trail which allows walkers to venture on the northern slope of the Sierra Nevada.

Among other details you will find on the edge of the road, a hundred-year old chestnut known as Star mine.

"El Abuelo".

Below on the left the road turns unexpectedly toward the south and offers magnificent views of the "rope of the Tresmiles", the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

A little further on, we will cross the bridge on the river Guarnón.
We will finish the route with the visit to the near "Secret Cave", which is an artificial refuge under a big rock.

 

El Castillejo

Castillo de Linza

 

El Castillejo or El Castillo de Linza was built by the Romans at the end of 711.

Although now only the remains remain, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of Güejar Sierra and the reservoir of Canales, as well as the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada. You can also see the imposing road with its zig-zags up to the Haza Llanas pass.

 

It is an easy but steep route of 3/4 hours in total and about 6 km, perfect for sunny winter days.

 

Los Lavaderos de la Reina

Y su deshielo

 

Los Lavaderos de la Reina is one of the most impressive sites in Sierra Nevada, famous for the snow caves that are formed during the thawing season, which make it such a wonderful and incredible place that you cannot miss, especially in the spring season. You cannot miss the experience of observing for yourself this spectacular natural phenomenon, those beautiful tunnels or ice caves that are formed throughout the area and that lately have become its best attraction.

 

With a maximum altitude of around 2,700 metres, this is a medium-difficulty route lasting approximately 5 hours.

The best time is in spring to appreciate the thawing of the ice.

 

 

Alto del Calar

And its trenches from the Civil War

 

Route through a group of hills that exceed 1,800 metres in altitude.

On one of these hills, the remains of trenches from the Spanish Civil War are in excellent condition.

A route with incredible views of the reservoir, the village and spectacular landscapes. It is also easy to find cattle grazing peacefully and you can admire striking rock formations along the route.

 

Medium difficulty, duration around 5/6 hours and with little shade, so it is not advisable to do it in summer.

 

La Araña

VIA FERRATA

 

Via ferrata of medium difficulty with vertical sections and overhanging steps that will test your courage. Along the route there are bridges, zip lines, DNA ladders, swings and overhangs.

A very complete and fun ferrata that combines the best of via ferratas, including the sensation of emptiness and a beautiful environment.

 

It is recommended to go in a group and with a specialised guide.
